Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the ABV of a mixed cocktail?
Convert every ingredient to a common volume unit, multiply each by its ABV to get the pure alcohol it contributes, add those up, then divide by the total volume of the drink. That gives the cocktail's overall ABV as a percentage.
What counts as a "standard drink"?
In the US, a standard drink contains about 0.6 fl oz (14g) of pure alcohol: roughly a 12 oz beer, a 5 oz glass of wine, or a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirit. This calculator converts your cocktail's total alcohol into that unit.
Does ice and dilution change the ABV?
Yes. This calculator uses the ingredient amounts as poured, before dilution. Shaking or stirring with ice adds water and lowers the final ABV in the glass, typically by 20 to 30%, which is part of why a shaken drink tastes less harsh than the raw pour.
